This enormous church building was in the heart of the center of the old city, the old capital of the Byzantine Empire. In the 6th century, Christianity was the main religion, and everything was going well. I guess there was no reason of NOT going to church at that time when the whole trend was into that.
Then in 15th century, the Muslims took over. The church was turned into a mosque. People still would worship there, though it was a different religion and a different faith.
Now today, the once-upon-a-time church is full of tourists, we all have to pass through security check, with x-ray machines like the airport. Needless to say, there is always a long line up. I suppose tourism and traveling is the new "faith" of our era, many would believe in enjoying life and treating yourselves to traveling and good food.
