Microstructure of Stainless steel has the grains which are arranged in parallel.so their structure is called Twin structure.
Stainless steels are commonly divided into five groups: 1.Martensitic stainless steels
- Ferritic stainless steels
- Austenitic stainless steels
- Duplex (ferritic-austenitic) stainless steels
5.Precipitation-hardening stainless steels.
They are Iron(Fe) based alloys containing of chromium and carbon .
A basic stainless steel has a ‘ferritic’ structure and is magnetic, formed from the addition of chromium – it can be hardened through the addition of carbon, making it ‘Martensiticstainless steel.
However, the most common stainless steels are ‘austenitic stainless steel. – these have a higher chromium content and nickel is also added.
Theoretically Austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic.
Martensitic stainless steel is Magnetic.
Austenitic stainless steel is used in utensils so that it can not rusting.
