Welcome back the the Mighty Columbia as some have called it. A 2000 km (1243 miles) long river that begins in Canada and snakes it's way through British Columbia before cutting through Washington then forming the Oregon, Washington border before finally draining into the Pacific Ocean.

The river has a drainage basin roughly the size of France.

I am fortunate enough to live on this river in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, an area formed by volcanoes over the last 37 million years and also known as the Cascade Volcanic Arc.

A byproduct of this volcanic activity is a type of igneous rock know as columnar basalt. Columnar basalt is basically lava that slowly cools underground which results in colums of rock being formed.

Let's take a look at a wonderful piece of that basalt because it's #bouldersunday, right @shasta ;)

This is a rather large piece of rock that has been placed next to a path along the Columbia.

It has also been transformed into a bench!

It was carved and polished by J. Hoge as a memorial to a local community leader and volunteer.

And there is the Columbia River in the background. What a lovely place to be.
