This is my favorite Mexican coin. It was a 1950 commemorative issue five pesos coin.
It has my favorite coin feature... EDGE LETTERING!!
This coin was minted at the Casa de Moneda de México (Mexican Mint) in Mexico City. It was a limited run of 200,000 coins and the story goes that most of them sat in the mint for years until half were melted down for the Mexican Olympics 25 pesos commemorative coin in 1968.

NOTE: Coin was badly distributed and most of them were stored in Mexico City Mint. Later when the time came to make other silver coins they were marked for re-melt; this destroyed over half of them, effectively making this one of the rarest mid-1900s silver coins in Mexico.
So, if that actually is the case, there were only 100,000 of these that hit the streets.
I can't find any solid info on this though. I'd love to read more about this coin and the history but I can't find much more than the mention of half the coins being melted down years later.

Oh, I just picked this one up at my lcs the other day :D
These are from an old coin collection that the shopkeeper acquired. He seems to think the coins came from the mint wrapped in those little cellophane bags like in the above picture.
I doubt it but who knows!?
