Over the last year or so I've been collecting a medieval legends silver round series from Provident Metals.
I posted about the series when it was announced and asked for guesses about which legends you thought would be featured. Check it out, and follow along...
The first round in this series is dedicated to the legend of Robin Hood. Undoubtedly, most people know the story of the archer that stole from the rich and gave the spoils to the poor. The Wikipedia page linked above is quite the rabbit hole if your so inclined.
Robin Hood as we know him became a folk hero of the pop culture landscape in 15th-century England. In this article on Historyplex.com I found this interesting to think about:
What’s important to understand is that Robin Hood’s stories change in tone depending on the period in which his exploits are retold. In the old English version, audiences felt oppressed by feudal regimes where the wealthy landowners over-taxed the people to keep them under control. In that era, Robin Hood represented disenfranchised locals who wanted to play-act in a world where their needs mattered.
Fun times!
