In the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, there is a famous line that reads:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
To be clear, I am not speaking about the superiority or inferiority or ethnicity and gender.
But let's be honest, I am a bald, middle-aged man, who is overweight and am only 5' 6" tall.
I can't dunk!
I was not created as a physical equal to the great Michael Jordan or the late Muhammad Ali. In their prime, these men were considered gods among mortals. I was endowed with the same right to pursue life liberty, and happiness, but we are not equals.
Our backgrounds are different, our struggles are different, our opportunities are different, and I need to be ok with the fact that in this case, life does not seem fair.
I need to be ok with that fact that great men and women have done great things throughout history because they were GREAT! They were not average. They were not normal. I must celebrate this inequality, this unfairness.
May our eyes never be blinded to the injustices of the world. May we all stand for our fellow brothers and sisters in the human race, regardless of differences in region, sexuality orientation, social-economic status, and political affiliation.
How sad and ironic that I only want to talk about life not being fair, when it is not fair to me. How often do I stand up for the inequality of rights? When have I marched against the injustices of the world? Not nearly enough!
But let us never confuse the inequality of rights with the inequality of gifting.
Most likely, you are facing something in your life right that does not seem fair.
Will you allow the injustice of the moment to paralyze you and bring your life to a halt, or will you choose to fight against and overcome this injustice in your pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness?
Choose the later. And defend others who choose the same!
