"Water is one of Earth’s major resources, it is the lifeblood of our planet. It pulses through our terrain, shallow and deep, seen and unseen, governed by the Moon yet flows by its own law. We breathe it, drink it and are in fact made from it. It’s one of the only substances that can withstand all three states: liquid, solid and gaseous, transform from one form to another and back again. Let’s not forget that it cannot be manufactured in a lab either, although we know it is comprised of H2O there is a fundamental element missing, preventing us from creating our own water, for now anyway.
Water’s liquid form is a harbourer of both life and death. It has the slow and determined power to carve canyons, shape boulders, devastate or save thousands. Civilizations germinated on and beside bodies of water that also provided gateways for trade and expansion. Like the blood in our veins water literally pumps through the Earth on a continuous rotation. It impregnates the subsurface for rest and fossilisation, rises amongst the air we breathe only to return, captured and consumed in our inevitable cycle of life for all organisms. Oceans crash and sputter like a flock of frenzied gulls on the surface, while remaining still as a Buddhist monk on pilgrimage at the deepest point, all within the same natural receptacle from surface to base. The incredible diversity, vitality and ferocious strength of water is so commonly overlooked. Its silent power is a force to be reckoned with and it's longevity will outlive the most ancient sanctums.
On a more left of field note, it is said that thoughts, emotions and outside influences effect the structure of water. For instance, Masaru Emoto’s studies published in 2008 demonstrated that words such as love and thank you exposed to water, then frozen would produce beautifully crafted crystals. Music such as Bach and Beethoven would also transform even polluted water in to delicate geometric crystals, as would prayer; the birth of holy water. On the opposing end, water exposed to hatred, disdain and heavy metal music would produce dishevelled and disturbed frozen crystals, as would water exposed to microwaves. Should this be as true as a heartbeat and as commonly known as red plus blue equals purple, how would we treat our water before we offered it to ourselves and to others?
Water which knows not of large scale gravity transforms in to vapour, it is home in Earth’s hydrosphere, it is free flowing and invisible. The point at which water meets an extreme temperature increase produces steam; revolutionising transportation, cooking, sanitation and energy. Peruvian healers procure the magic of vapour healing and Shamans read the will of ways in the free-flowing haze. Water vapour is the vehicle for the transportation from sky to ground being wholly part of the water cycle on Earth. It’s capricious state which we have understood and tamed has become a vital process in our state of being.
I believe water to be an intelligent, adaptive store room of information and communication, and that in this lifetime, we will never understand it’s entire potential and purpose."
This is a submission I once made once for an exhibition. As it didn't make it to the final panel, I haven't painted the submission. I was up against some pretty stiff competition, however I still plan to paint some pieces for my thoughts here and maybe I will share them here eventually.
