A kind of recent news is that Dark Souls won the award for "Ultimate Game of All Time" at the Golden Joystick Awards, a rather imposing title and although the main point of this post is not Dark Souls, it may end up being an recurrent example in terms of hard games, in general From Software has been dedicated to launching playable adventures over the years that aren't friendly with the players, experienced or not, especially if they are not, and both these games and many others open the debate to whether it's necessary to implement an "easy mode", a lower difficulty, or as you like to call it, in short, "something" that makes things easier for the players.

This is a very heated debate where everyone has something to say on the matter, some say yes, and others say no, everyone has their point of view, and if I didn't give them mine, this wouldn't be a post about my opinion, thanks Captain Obvious.

I'll continue with the example of Dark Souls since I played it this year, very late I must say, but I deviate from the point, and it seems to me a perfect game as it is, eliminating a couple of technical problems, the experience is transcendental, I would even call it therapeutic because the game came to me at an ideal moment and helped me with a couple of things, therefore I have a lot of love and respect for it despite all the anger that I could go through with the lots of traps and bosses that initially seem broken as hell.

On the other hand, I have a lot of free time compared to other people, and that is what sometimes allows me to play for several hours a day without many problems in front of my responsibilities, I have a very flexible schedule and I'm grateful for it, but on the other hand we have video game players who perhaps have full working hours and can only dedicate a few minutes a day to play, others despite having the necessary time, the difficulty of the game scares them for not wanting to spend hours stuck in the same boss (and this is not bad though), and others may not have the time but the will to do so, the point is we all have our routine and way of adapting to things.

Imagine that that person with very little free time comes home wanting to chill and have a good time, and all they do is die, over and over again, in the best of cases this person would be a very fast learner. or very determined to still complete the game with all that.

To put another case, we have Celeste and its "Assistance Mode", which allows a number of facilities to the player such as immortality, infinite stamina, or even skipping complete levels, this is an additional option and doesn't interfere with the "standard" experience that the game wants to offer, which is also quite challenging, but offers this facility for those who want to enjoy the story or the feeling of climbing a mountain without the stress part.

My point with all this is that playing a game on easy should be normalized, either in a difficulty mode or some precise options, whoever wants to use them, do it, and whoever doesn't, then go for the standard experience or something more difficult, in this industry skill is highly valued, and that is fine, but playing on a lower difficulty should not be a reason for ridicule or criticism, there are games that make fun of you a little when doing it, and it's funny, as with Viewtiful Joe, here difficulties are classified for "Kids" and "Adults", but in the end everyone plays the way they enjoy the most so that should be respectable.

In any case, I'm limiting all this to levels of difficulty and nothing else, despite advocating everything I have already said, I don't consider myself particularly bad (or good) in any genre (except sports, there I'm bad with all of the law), improving is a quite satisfactory feeling though, but there are people who are behind different things when it comes to play games, be it gameplay, story, music, or even those who start a game for a specific character and nothing else, and it's a shame that an important audience is lost from a great game just because of how inaccessible it can be, for whatever reason.

The developers will have the final word, in the case of From Software, their games sell as is, they are all highly acclaimed and it doesn't seem that will end anytime soon, so they'll see if they expand their player target or not, and in a general context, the important thing is that we all enjoy this precious means of entertainment in the best possible way.

I can only say the usual, I would like to know your opinions, thank you very much for reading, and see you later, bye bye.
