The Story of Three
By Elena Madrid
You, Me and She
Shared blood
Entirely different
Yet
Connect through a cycle of strife and grief
Passed on from
Grandmother, to Mother, to Daughter
Disconnection from each other
Leading to a disconnection from self
Love not given, love not felt
So we have suffered
Prisoners to a suffocating cycle
But this shall not be the path we continue to roam
For love and beauty our future daughters will know
To them we will give new strength
Based on acceptance and worth, value and trust
For the story of three is now the story of four
Carried forth by you
Granddaughter
And what shall that story be?
One that speaks of spirits finally set free
Embodied in you
May you be a reflection of all that is love
All that is peace
All that is beauty
All that the three
Always longed to be
This piece won Honorable Mention at our 2017 Ekphrasis Exhibition - An Exploration of the Mind Body Soul (http://www.centexartistcollective.org/exhibits-and-events/ctacs-ekphrasis-art-words/).
It was an artwalk exhibit designed for education and awareness. It was an effort to destigmatize any misunderstanding towards the challenges of mental health. This piece was created by Elena Madrid (mother/writer) and Danielle Madrid (daughter/visual artist) combo. Elena became aware of her daughter's obstacles in life and wanted to connect them with this project to inform her that one does not have to go "through it" alone. The action of creative expression can be enough to heal wounds not totally understood or recognized. We couldn't have been more grateful to have their participation in this monumental show.
Thank you for taking time to read this and I hope to highlight more of the outstanding artwork from this one-of-a-kind event.
Stay tuned and looking forward!
