Why I Pay Attention to Monsters with the Opportunity Ability

One thing I enjoy about Splinterlands is how certain abilities can change the targets my monsters attack. When building a team, I cannot always rely on my frontline attackers to eliminate every dangerous opponent. Sometimes, the biggest threat is hiding behind the first monster, and reaching that threat can make a difference.

The Opportunity ability is interesting because it allows a monster to attack the enemy monster with the lowest health. This means the attack does not necessarily go towards the opponent standing in the first position. Instead, the monster can target a weaker enemy elsewhere on the battlefield.

I like this because it creates another way to approach team selection. Rather than concentrating all my damage on the frontline, I can include a monster that may help eliminate weaker opponents before they have too many opportunities to contribute.

For example, imagine the opposing team has a powerful attacker with very little health remaining, positioned behind a strong tank. My frontline might struggle to get through the tank quickly, but a monster with Opportunity could potentially target the weakened attacker. Removing that threat could make the rest of the battle easier to manage.

Of course, the ability does not guarantee that the monster will eliminate its target immediately. The attack still has to deal enough damage, and the target may have defensive abilities that affect the outcome. I have to consider these details rather than assuming that targeting a low-health monster automatically means getting an elimination.

Another thing I find interesting is how Opportunity can change the importance of health management. When my monsters are damaged, they may become potential targets for the opponent’s Opportunity attackers. This reminds me that protecting my weaker monsters can be just as important as keeping my frontline alive.

I also think about the value of healing and defensive support. If I can keep my damaged monsters alive, I may prevent the opponent from easily removing them with targeted attacks. However, I cannot depend entirely on healing because a sufficiently strong attack can still eliminate a monster before it gets another chance to benefit from support.

Positioning is another factor worth considering. Although Opportunity allows a monster to target the enemy with the lowest health, the attacker’s own position and other battle conditions can still matter. I need to understand the rules of the match and make sure my lineup can function effectively under those conditions.

Mana restrictions make the decision more interesting. Sometimes, I have to choose between an Opportunity monster and a card that offers stronger frontline defence. I cannot always include every card I like, so I have to think about what my team is missing. If I already have enough frontline damage, adding a monster that can target weaker enemies might give me a different advantage.

I also appreciate how this ability encourages me to pay attention to the entire opposing lineup. It is easy to focus on the first monster because that is usually where the battle begins. However, the weakest enemy may be a more important target if it has a dangerous ability or contributes significant damage.

For me, Opportunity is a reminder that choosing the right target can be just as important as choosing the right attacker. A strong monster is useful, but a monster that can apply pressure to vulnerable enemies offers another way to weaken the opposing team.

As I continue playing, I want to experiment with different Opportunity monsters and learn when they fit best into my lineups. Every battle provides another chance to understand how abilities interact and how small decisions can influence the outcome. Sometimes, the quickest route to weakening a team is not fighting through its strongest monster, but taking advantage of the weaknesses elsewhere.
