I played a Splinterlands battle where I started paying more attention to how much armor my monsters could lose before being defeated. I used to think that choosing a monster with good armor was enough to protect my team from physical attacks. However, I have learned that armor can disappear quickly when an opponent has several attackers, and once that protection is gone, my monsters become more vulnerable. This made me interested in the Repair ability and how it can help a team stay in the battle for longer.

When I looked at the different ways to protect my monsters, I realised that preventing damage is not the only option. Sometimes, restoring lost protection can be just as useful. A monster with Repair restores some armor to a friendly monster whose armor has been damaged. This can help a tank continue absorbing physical attacks instead of becoming exposed too early.

One card I considered for this strategy was Scavo Hireling. Its Repair ability allows it to restore armor to a friendly monster, giving it a useful support role. I like cards like this because they can contribute to the team without needing to deal a lot of damage themselves. Their value comes from helping other monsters perform their jobs more effectively.

I began thinking about how I could use a card like Scavo Hireling alongside a durable tank. If my first-position monster had a good amount of armor, Repair could help restore some of that protection after it was damaged. This would be especially useful against an opponent relying heavily on melee and ranged attacks. Instead of allowing my tank’s armor to disappear permanently, I could potentially recover some of it during the battle.

However, I also realised that this strategy has limitations. Repair restores armor, not health, so it cannot solve every defensive problem. If an opponent relies heavily on magic attacks, restoring armor may not provide the protection I need. I would have to consider the type of damage my team was facing before deciding whether Repair deserved a place in my lineup.

Another thing I thought about was the importance of protecting my support monster. Scavo Hireling is useful because of what it does for the rest of the team, but it still needs to survive long enough to provide that support. If the opponent can attack my backline and eliminate it early, I may lose the advantage I was hoping to gain. This means I cannot focus only on protecting my tank; I also need to consider where my support cards are positioned.

Mana management is another part of this decision. Including a support monster means using mana that could have gone toward another attacker. I need to decide whether the extra protection is worth that cost. In some battles, a Repair monster might help my tank survive long enough to make a significant difference. In others, choosing another damage dealer might be the better decision.

I also want to pay more attention to the battle rules before using this strategy. Some rulesets can change how armor behaves or make certain types of damage more common. If the conditions favour physical attacks, restoring armor could be particularly valuable. If the battle encourages magic damage or includes effects that make armor less useful, I may need a different approach.

What I find interesting about this ability is that it encourages me to think beyond direct attacks. A monster does not always need to eliminate an enemy to make a meaningful contribution. Sometimes, helping a teammate survive one more round can give the rest of the team enough time to deal damage and turn the battle around.

I am learning that good team selection involves balancing offense and defense. A strong attacker can put pressure on the opponent, but a useful support card can help my team maintain that pressure for longer. The challenge is knowing when the extra protection is necessary and when I should use my mana elsewhere.

Going forward, I want to experiment more with support abilities like Repair instead of concentrating only on monsters with high damage. Understanding how armor restoration works, which monsters benefit from it, and when the ability is most useful can help me make better decisions. Every battle gives me another opportunity to understand how small advantages can contribute to a stronger overall strategy.
