A UK equivalent to Mike Post could be Ronnie Hazelhurst. He wrote the theme tunes for many comedy shows in the 1970s. This was when I was growing up and as we only had three channels everyone watched the same shows.
He liked to incorporate sounds and other elements of the shows into the music. Last of the Summer Wine was about a group of old guys in a small Yorkshire town who would get up to all sorts of adventures. It ran for 37 years with the cast changing as various actors passed on. It employed a lot of them at the end of their careers. Although it has no lyrics you can sing the title along with the main part.
The theme for Are You Being Served had lyrics as well as the sound of a cash register. The show was set in Grace Brothers' department store. The comedy was very much of its time and might not go down well with a modern audience. You had the grumpy old lady, the young sexy female assistant, the girl-chasing young guy and a very camp man. Quite a few shows had obviously homosexual characters back then. The store owner was a very old man who was always attended by sexily dressed 'nurses'. This was in the same period as Benny Hill.
Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em featured the accident prone Frank Spencer, played by Michael Crawford who has also had a career in musicals such as Hello Dolly and The Phantom of the Opera. The clever part of the theme is that it has piccolos playing the title in Morse code. Some episodes were filmed in my home town of Bedford. This show spawned a few catchphrases.
This has been a fun trip down memory lane. We heard these tunes so many times that they got stuck in my head. Some of the shows still get repeated now we have many more channels. I find some of them hard to watch, but then I never really liked comedy that made me cringe.
