Bass guitar is part of the sound of a band, but can be a solo instrument too. I think it can have quite a vocal quality, especially fretless. I have been to some solo bass gigs by Steve Lawson and Michael Manring. I have also posted about Jeff Schmidt.

Apart from anything else a bass can be harder to play than a guitar with those fat strings and big stretches. Some really talented people out there.
