I don't think there is such a thing as 'the press'. The media is made up of many individuals. Some of them are desperate for any story, but others risk their lives to report on what goes on. You seem to have encountered some of the lower forms, but I don't think we should follow the example of politicians who try to discredit journalists, apart from those who favour them of course. Just my opinion.
