It may have origins in Norman French. It was only really from the audio guide that I learned how it is said :) Back then kings could do whatever they wanted, but some politicians now seem to have similar ambitions. Those were brutal times. Of course the church hoarded wealth too whilst the common people struggled to get by. It was a very unequal society with religion used to keep folk in their place.
