Description from Strava:
I was helping out at parkrun yesterday, but jogged there and back to log a run. The weather was horrible, but lots of people turned out. Today the weather was much nicer, which was welcome as I was competing in Run Around the Garden in Letchworth. I have not done this event before. There are 5k and 1 mile races around the centre on closed roads. I entered both.
I cycled over there, which is largely uphill. I went via the Greenway which proved to a little muddy. The race HQ was in one of the squares where I could pick up my number. Somehow I got number 9, but I did not think I registered that early. I met up with a couple of people from parkrun who were doing the 5k.
We did the longer run first and I think I set off too fast. We went out to the UK's first roundabout before turning back to go past the start for a loop before repeating most of the course. I was really finding it hard and my left leg was not doing too well. I actually had to walk a little. As I finished the first lap the leaders were heading for the finish. I made it round, but the time was not great. At that point I was wondering if doing the mile would be a mistake, but I decided to go for it and take it steadily.
There was only a half hour between the races. One of the sponsor stalls has some little juice drinks, so I had one of those. There were less people doing the mile and it was a mix of club runners and kids who wanted to do a shorter run. There was also a fun run later that was even shorter.
I felt a little better on this run that covered much of the same course. I managed to run all the way, but the time was also not great.
I joined my friends in the cafe afterwards. A coffee and caramel shortbread restored some of my energy for the ride home. I went a different way to avoid the mud and I was going back down the hills, so it was not too bad.
There were 231 finishers in the 5k and 63 in the mile. I am really glad the weather was good. The sun was quite warm at times.
I have a few chores to do today, but will have a rest from running tomorrow. I am doing okay in the company rankings for our charity effort, but I am not going to overdo my running just for that.
Enjoy your Sunday and run/ride free.
