Very rarely can Silver or Gold be bought at the current (spot) price as there is often a premium attached to it. Sometimes it is $1 or less per ounce and others times it can be quite high if it is a numismatic or American Silver Eagle, Canadian Maple, etc. There are many costs associated with the creation of the Steem Round other than the cost of the silver. Here are a few:
As you can see, this list is fairly long. Some of these costs are fixed (artwork & die modeling/creation), while others are variable (fabrication, engraving of serial numbers, coin capsules, and certificate of authenticity). By helping to crowdfund the Steem Silver Round, we are able to offset some of these costs in order to get the ultimate price per coin as low as possible.
If you look at our wallet, we currently have received some Steem and Steem Dollars from others users here on the Steem platform. Some people are writing posts about the round or doing fundraising posts, while others are holding raffles of 2017 Steem Silver Rounds or other Silver pieces and donating the proceeds to @SteemSilverRound. There have also been quite a few users who have just donated some Steem/Steem Dollars.
