Today's question might cause a little bit of conflict. Heck, the moderators were quick to jump on putting the question on hold and we know why! When you ask a question about who should pay for the date, some people are quick to form sides and never agree. We're not like that though ;). The poster asks:
So, it still seems to be common etiquette for a man to pay for the first date with a woman.
It's considered nice, but it's baffling me a little as to why it still exists nowadays because I think some of the reasons for it existing in the first place have now vanished: women can now get an education and earn their own money.
What do you feel about who pays on a date and who should pay? How I feel about it:
- Varies by area. I know many girls that split their part, but they live in areas that are less traditional.
- Most guys don't like the awkwardness of only paying their part. This sounds easy, but in a social situation it becomes hard to only pay one's part. Guys have told me that it felt weird to have the girl pay her part of the date.
- Choose dates that don't cost money. If you feel this is a problem, you can pick activities that cost $0. There are so many of these and they're all fun!
- Culture has a big impact on this. Some cultures don't want their kids to feel like they owe something, so they emphasize each person paying their part.
