Truth be told, on most days I feel like throwing my phone down the window. Not because I don’t appreciate the good that can come out of it. What would my soul become without an infinite supply of distraction? It would probably become fucking better, I’ll tell you that. I may be abstinent and refrain from engaging in thrill seeking experiences, but I’m sill human after all and fall of my lane every so often.
I just feel that me and him – we would be better off parting ways.
We would do so much better if there wasn’t this fucking connection between us.
I just can’t get my hands off him. Literally.
There’s this palpable tension that always keeps me going back to him.
I have eyes, and only for him. It doesn’t matter there’s people everywhere in the room.
He’s still lucky enough that I will pick him, over anyone. At anytime.
I can’t help it! I swear, I turn him on the moment I wake up in the morning! We’re doing that great, you know? Even after all these years, even after all the times I got close to breaking him, we’re still that tight!
But recently I’ve been thinking…this is just too much. I have no control over him anymore. He takes away my focus, my self-control, my sense of self….I know that it’s unhealthy. But I told you before that I’m attracted to danger… I love it when it’s bad. And that's fucking bad.
And after all, how can I break up with him when he’s always on me?
Simply put, we’re addicted.
Addicted to instant gratification.
Addicted to the false sense of company that our device provides us with.
How can you resist something that is always a finger away from you?
Our devices have thrown down the drain the ultimate real deal: human connection.
And most of us know that. Yet we’re still willing to pick him over the real deal. That’s how delusional we have become.
Instead of filling our mind, heart and soul with real life stuff, we choose to fill them with data. Data. Just saying this word makes me go nuts. DATA.
How about giving some uninterrupted attention to your DATE? How about that?
How about consciously realizing that there’s a life that extends beyond the screen you’re holding in your hands?
Do you realize all the opportunities we’ve missed because we’d rather reply to a text instead of perhaps sparking a conversation with the person sitting right beside us?
If only all that time and energy we put into making sure our social media sites look cute we would invest it into sustaining our real life relationships. I wonder how life would be if tomorrow all of our devices would no longer be. It isn’t normal that people turn to each other only in times of tragedy, but when life is going smooth and all, they turn to their smartphone. It isn’t normal that we don’t know our neighbors, but we know what the new girlfriend of our ex looks like. (you know who you are 😉 )
So what’s the deal now?
What are we going to do about this?
Perhaps swipe left on our phones, and right on the real world where real human connections are waiting to be built?
