Don’t we all love a new fresh romance, fresher than your average ex?
I get it. Limerence is all fun and games, until it’s game over.
Then the fun sets the stage to the most taboo topic to talk about in the relationship department: boredom. A.k.a. lack of novelty. A.k.a too much predictability. Don’t we love all that fun stuff?
Too bad you didn’t know what you were signing yourself up for!
The truth is that human beings don’t initially fall in love. They fall in fantasy. They fall for a fantasy. They fall for lust. They fall for chemistry. They fall for the ideas they hold in their mind about the object of their desire. Hence why when shit hits the fan, and reality sets back in, they don’t know how to handle it. But can we really blame ourselves when we’ve embedded this twisted idea that excitement has to be a constant in all the endeavors we pursue? It’s no wonder that when we feel the slightest lack of stimulation, we lose our shit (and perhaps our common sense).
I guess you could blame it on the era of forever distraction that we live in. There are no limits to how much short lived pleasure you can consume in the world of today. Feel like stuffing your face with some mcdicks? Only an UberEats away. Feel like jerking off? Only a click away. Fucking your feelings of loneliness away? Only a Tinder away. Spending your worries away? Only a click away. Getting rid of the so uncomfortable feelings of inadequacy? Only a Facebook update away.
And the sad truth is that you can do all of the above in only one day. Now imagine how hard it is to cope with boredom, and dry spells and unhappiness when the person you (allegedly) love, doesn’t meet all of your 36 million needs for 48 hours? It gets real fucking hard, I’mma tell you that.
Getting what we want (and when we want it) has never been so easy. And while this looks exciting on paper, in reality, it’s really a disaster and a half. Because when we’re given the option to choose between pain and pleasure, the choice is too easy to make. It’s too easy to throw away the boring to get a new shot of exciting. To get rid of the old, to have more of the new.
We’ve lost sight of the real value of things. That we can’t rely on magic to do the trick. That anything worthwhile requires daily maintenance. That there is nothing in life that is deeply fulfilling that is easy.
