I grew up around people who were drinking, and I felt kind of weird around them too.
When someone is drinking, their mind and emotions are affected. For some people, this is their way to relax.
Others however don’t know when to stop, and what that happens, their behavior can be particularly troubling to a BF or GF - especially if they aren’t drinking along with them.
I worked in a psychiatric hospital with alcoholics so I know how alcohol can take over someone’s life. I witnessed the destruction alcohol causes - both to the person drinking as well as to their families and coworkers.
I’ve also traveled to Russia, where drinking is a national pastime. The number of alcoholics living there is staggering. I’ve seen people who could barely stand up, propped against the teller windows trying to buy a metro ticket to get to work in the morning. Others weren’t so lucky and died before the age of 50 from a life of hard drinking - and many died even younger.
When I see someone drinking, those images come to mind. I know how awkward I feel when someone I know gets stinking drunk. It’s not a pretty sight to behold.
I also know why I feel weird when a girlfriend drinks. That’s because they start slurring their words and sloppily push their tongues into my mouth.
I’ve been accosted at dinner parties by people who should have stopped drinking several drinks before we met. I’ve attempted to have a civil conversation with someone who’s drunk.
Things never go well when I find myself around a group of heavy drinkers. That’s why I will never again date someone whose life revolves around alcohol.
