Sanchi - The Buddhist Complex. [UNESCO World Heritage Site ]
There were many stories about the spread of Buddhism in India. However you very rarely heard about the architecture related to the Buddhism. Infact there are very few to talk about. One of prominent of all is the Sanchi Stupa. These Stupqs were originally built to house the earthly remains of the historical Buddha and his associates.
Sanchi is famous for its Great Stupa, on a hilltop at Sanchi Town in Raisen District of the State of Madhya Pradesh, India. It was originally built in the 3rd century BC by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka and is believed to house ashes of the Buddha. It is one of the Great example.of Indian Architecture. The building nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha.
The entrance itself shows the wealth of Buddhist Architecture. Besutiful portray of animal, dwarfs and others were carved out of stone.
Each gateway is made up of two squared posts topped by capitals of sculptured animals or dwarfs, surmounted by three architraves. All the elements are covered with relief sculpture depicting the events of the Buddha’s life, Jataka stories (about the Buddha’s previous lives), scenes of early Buddhism, and auspicious symbols.
Now if you are wondering and curious to look inside the Stupas, I would say, it is not possible. Sounds funny but this is True The hemispherical shape Architecture doesn't have any entrance door. There's no doorway leading inside. It's a solid mound of dirt, and contains relics of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama. And in simple words, a stupa is a dirt burial mound faced with stone. which ultimately won't lead us to anywhere.
