Tobacco was first imported back in the late 16th century, from Virginia. And pipe making reached its peak in the mid 17th century. During this time people were actually put to death for smoking, and women and children smoked pipes thinking it warded of the plague. The pipe grew in stem length, to aid in a cooler smoke. At one point all phases of life were depicted on the pipe. However the long stems broke easily, and were thrown away on the spot. Hence making them a small income, and sport today. I've now seen them presented in head & pong shops
