Few years back I had an experience that left an indelible mark on me and it’s all about compliments.
Have you ever been complimented?
What was the feeling?
Just read on!
On that fateful day, I was standing in front of our office on Marina waiting for a colleague prelude joining the lift. One of the office assistants in one of the offices in the building who never looked too sophisticated walked across with a smile as she greeted. I turned, returned her greetings and added ‘you look good’. She paused, took a little bow and increased her steps with a giggle.
Two days later, she called my attention during break time. It turned to a question and answer session.
Young lady : Please Sir, you complimented me in the morning two days ago.
I : Yes I can remember that vividly.
Young lady : Are you sure or were you just pulling my legs?
I : No. Not at all. Why do you ask?
Young lady : Wow!
I : What about that?
Young lady : That was the first time ever someone complimented me. I have never been told that that I looked nice both by family and friends.
I : Yes, you look good even today. Your cloths are well ironed, a nice hairdo and well-polished foot wears. Your skin glows. You must have made a nice choice of a cream.
Young lady : But all these that I wore are all second hand materials.
I : I never knew. You just told me now. You must have an eye for good material for you to pick them.
As I said the last sentence, I took a step to walk away. She stretched out her hand and gave me a warm handshake. And her face was radiating with smile and almost a giggle as she took the opposite direction.
Weeks on, there seems to be a transformation on her personality that many of her colleagues took notice of it – that’s the power of Compliments.
But, who does not like a compliments? Perhaps no one. Athletes double their work rate when fans cheer them up, captains of industries do better via social responsibilities when recognized with awards, employees are encouraged to do better when they are verbally and materially complimented, the same goes to any young man or woman out there.
May be that partners of yours at home will do better if you compliment him or her today. The same goes for that struggling child at school. A co-worker or that person you see and meet on daily bases.
Be generous with a compliment today and put a smile on a face. Everyone craves for it!
