Knitting is a popular activity, especially in winter. For many of us, knitting associates with grannies, but lately I see a lot of young girls and even men doing it. I think it is a very therapeutic activity. It can even become relaxing when you know what you’re doing and you don’t have to count stitches and rows. 😊
I personally made a few hats and scarfs this winter, here are my latest creations. I am not a pro! Most of my work is done by following YouTube patterns and instructions.
Because I enjoy knitting, I decided to do some research, hoping to find some cools stories and myths that I can share. Surprisingly, I found out that knitting doesn’t have an ancient pedigree. Maybe because the ancient knitted garments have disappeared? Obviously, our ancestors used natural fibers that decompose easily...
Anyways, I learned that the first genuine knitted pieces are from Egypt, circa 1000-1400 AD. I also learned that the earliest known knitted items in Europe were made by Muslim knitters employed by Spanish Christian royal families. They were mostly cushion covers and gloves.
Knitting spread throughout the world during centuries and many elaborate designs were developed. Some families even made a living out of this activity. 🧶
The so-called ‘handmade revolution’ began in the 21st century with the Internet, where information is so easy to find. We can find amazing fibers and patterns, we connect with other knitters to exchange ideas and share experiences. How cool is that?
