Throughout the years, my best friend and I have had a saying when we find a new significant other the other doesn't approve of. We would tell each other "Don't name the puppy", sort of a code word for "I don't like him/her and I don't think they are right for you. I wrote this song when she started dating someone I wasn't particularly thrilled with and I had personally just got out of a failed relationship with someone she wasn't particularly thrilled with either. It was a playful way to poke fun at one another throughout the years.
