Order and legality were the principles that animated the algorithm that analyzed the surrounding environment and instructed the metal sheriff on how to behave. The night shift was the busiest and often the support of the central office was required to bring offenders into the cell. The artificial intelligence allowed the robot to perform complex reasoning, very similar to the human ones, but it did not allow him to understand the reason for the continuous infractions of these beings with high intelligence, inventors moreover of the robots of which he was part and that had the task of supervising and sanctioning their own creators. The most likely explanation was that in the algorithm that governed them was nested a bug called "emotions".

R236Z era un modello datato ma ancora efficiente di robot dedito al pattugliamento cittadino, dotato di pistola laser stordente, interveniva in caso di infrazioni di varia natura. Ordine e legalità erano i principi che animavano l'algoritmo che analizzava l'ambiente circostante ed istruiva lo sceriffo metallico su come comportarsi. Il turno notturno era quello più animato e spesso era richiesto il supporto della centrale per traportare i trasgressori in cella. L'intelligenza artificiale permetteva al robot di compiere ragionamenti complessi, molto simili a quelli umani, ma non gli permetteva di comprendere il perchè delle continue infrazioni di questi esseri dalla spiccata intelligenza, inventori peraltro dei robot di cui faceva parte e che avevano il compito di sorvegliare e sanzionare i loro stessi creatori. La spiegazione più probabile era che nell'algoritmo che li governava era annidato un bug denominato "emozioni".
