Clarke appena aveva qualche giorno libero prendeva l'auto e partiva senza una meta precisa, l'importante era sfrecciare sull'asfalto e gustarsi il senso di libertà. Appena arrivava ad un incrocio decideva dove svoltare sul momento, seguendo l'istinto e a seconda del paesaggio che gli si parava all'orizzonte. Quando entrava in qualche piccola cittadina la percorreva in tutta la sua estensione.
