Jane didn't see people but stains: there was Mr. Tomato, Mrs. Lipstick, Sweat Boy and so on. Working in a dry cleaner, she matched the garment and its stain to the customer. The work was boring and repetitive, so she imagined the dynamics that led the clothes to stain. Mrs. Tomato Stain had a small child who had just switched to solid food, but he preferred to play with it and with a spoon threw it into every corner of the kitchen, including the curtains. Mrs. Lipstick wore a lot of makeup, she wasn't pretty so she had to go overboard where mother nature had been stingy. At lunchtime the napkin, along with the food, was soaked with lipstick that ended up on her skirt. Sweaty boy was very shy and when on the bus crossed the gaze of a vaguely pretty girl he would melt trying to give himself an interesting and mysterious air.
