OK, so boxes seem to be my theme today. Mr Cat got his box to play in
This box theme started Friday with the unboxing of the box that had the box with my new AMD RX-570 in it.
Mr Cat got his new toy and so did I.
With the new box arrival I figured today was a great day to take my empty box that Mr. Cat approved of the other day
...and fill it will all my goodies. Here is the end result.
It took most of the day to cut the holes out for the fans because I left my tools locked up on the island so all I had was a keyhole saw and a Philips screwdriver. Nonetheless, I managed to get both mining rigs placed inside their new home and get it all rewired without setting the apartment on fire.
I put four 120mm case fans up in the top of the box to vent the heat from the video cards to the outside. I was a bit worried the 4 fans would not be adequate for the 7 video cards and 2 motherboards but increasing the fan speed on the GPU's did the trick and all components are running at 65 degrees C. or less and my AC is actually cooling my room again so all in all the project was a huge success.
With hindsight I may have to switch out the case fans and add a fan or two that will move a higher volume of air as I add more GPU's to the mix. So if you're thinking of cooling solutions for your mining rig... Try a box. Remember the fundamentals of heat, heat rises, so it's much easier and efficient to evacuate the heat from the top of a box versus trying to blow cold air on to the heat source . I am anxious to continue to upgrade/add to my mining rigs and see how well this design will work (or not) as the GPU hashpower increases.
