One thing I’ve never quite understood about The Shining—and I mean the Stanley Kubrick version—is why that movie, out of all movies, gets picked apart scene by scene like it's the Zapruder film. Every frame has been dissected, decoded, and dragged into some kind of symbolic conspiracy. "This means that," "That means this," "The carpet is actually a map to the moon landing hoax." It’s like a full-time job for some people.
Now don’t get me wrong—The Shining is a cool movie. We all love Jack Nicholson losing his mind in a snowed-in hotel. But “Jack goes crazy” isn’t exactly a unique plot. Hell, there are entire subgenres of “Jack goes crazy” films. So why this one? Why The Shining and not, say, Jacob’s Ladder, Session 9, or even Event Horizon?
Is it really Kubrick’s genius at work? Or is it just a bunch of cinematic fart-sniffers gatekeeping the movie like, “Oh, you just don’t understand Kubrick”? Like it’s a puzzle only the enlightened can solve?
Or... is there actually something special about The Shining? Something buried deep in the way it makes you feel uncomfortable without knowing why? Maybe the real horror is how much of it is left unsaid.
I don’t know. But I’m not convinced that hiding a typewriter on a different side of the room between shots makes it a masterpiece. Maybe it's just a continuity error. Or maybe Kubrick really was trying to tell us something—like “don’t trust your own memory.”
Either way, I’d love to hear what makes The Shining the movie worth decoding, when so many others get left in the snow.
