This is a picture of a double eclipse taken by NASA
This picture was taken by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. The Earth is in the Upper left and the moon is in the upper right. Before this picture was taken the Earth was actually blocking the sun. (Complete darkness doesn’t make a good picture.) The Edge of the moon is much sharper. This is because it has no atmosphere , unlike Earth. This picture was taken in a wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light. [1]
Even though Earth’s atmosphere has a major effect in this photo, it is not actually very big. In total the atmosphere is about 480 kilometers thick, although most of it is within 16 kilometers of the surface. Compare this to the diameter of Earth, which is 12,756 km.[2]
