Hello friends, welcome to my new Thursday TBT post, continuing with the birthday theme. This post is going to be a bit long, so go on, make yourself comfortable and grab some popcorn. 😅
After my 11th birthday party, my mum started saving money from her full-time job as a seamstress to celebrate my 15th birthday. In Venezuela, it’s customary at this age to have a ‘debutante’ ball to introduce young ladies to society. I didn’t want a party because I didn’t want to be the centre of attention; I’d much rather have gone on a trip anywhere. My mum respected my decision and came up with the idea of giving me a trip to Disney World in the United States as part of a tour organised for quinceañeras. I loved the idea and was really excited in the months leading up to my birthday.
I remember how my mum worked tirelessly to pay for the whole package; she was just as excited to give me that present. One night she told me she’d got everything sorted – the paperwork and the money – and that the next day we’d both go to pay for the package, a month before my birthday. That night I struggled to fall asleep with excitement, but I nearly died of disappointment. 😪🥴😭. That night was the infamous Black Friday – a night that will be remembered by my generation and those before us as the most disastrous in Venezuela’s economic history, because that was when the bolívar, our currency, suffered one of the biggest devaluations in history, and my dream died before it was even born.
My mum knew that the package was priced in US dollars, paid for in bolivars, and that the conversion would take place – and the trip ended up costing ten times more than it originally did. My mum cried and so did I, but I realised it was up to me to cheer her up, so I let her know that I didn’t mind that much, that she could give me anything she liked, and that her intention and sacrifice over all those months were my greatest gift. 🥲😊. In the end, she used that money to buy an exercise machine that we never used.
After I turned 15, the next birthday I celebrated was when I turned 20. At home, I already had two younger brothers, and the priority for birthday celebrations was theirs. I’d been working since I was 14, so I realised that if I wanted a party, I’d have to pay for it myself. Instead of celebrating my own birthdays, I started paying for my siblings’ birthday parties, but by the time I turned 20 I was at university, and I remember that that year, for the first time, I received three cakes in my honour.
The first cake was at the company where I was doing my university work placement. They really surprised me there when they brought out the cake and started singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me; I hadn’t mentioned it, but they’d found out, and although they weren’t my friends but just work colleagues, it was a lovely gesture that I really appreciated. I took some of the cake home with me. That same day I had classes at the technical college, and a small group of my friends also threw me a surprise birthday party. After classes, just when I thought the day was over and I was really tired, I got home and my family had another cake waiting for me. I don’t have any photos from that birthday; back then, mobile phones weren’t around yet 🤣🤭 and film cameras were hardly used anymore.
The years went by, and when I was 26, I had a boyfriend who celebrated my birthday with his family; I don’t have any photos from that either. Then a few more years passed, and I’m not even sure if I actually celebrated my birthday or not. At 32, I got a huge surprise from my best friend. I was at university, and my friend had arranged with her partner—who was studying with me—and another classmate to bring a giant cake at the end of the last lecture, just before 11 pm.
I was speechless when I saw her arrive with that enormous cake and the whole lecture theatre full of people; I hadn’t suspected a thing. 😁 There was enough cake for everyone and some to take home. When I turned 33, I remember wanting to go to the beach, and a friend invited me to spend the day at a guesthouse where she was a guest; of course I accepted and spent the day by the sea.
We’ve now reached the birthday featured in the photos in this post: my 34th birthday. In the photos you can see my friend who organised the surprise for me at university; she came with her husband and their little boy, and my whole family was there – my granny looks young and a bit chubby, my parents, my siblings and my Aunt Martina. We were all a bit chubby. My mum had this cake made for me by the same lady who made my 11th birthday cake; I’ve only just realised that from the design and by thinking back.
All the photos were taken by my friend’s husband, who was also my friend – almost a brother to me – and who is no longer with us. 😔🥹. We laughed so much that day; I felt so happy and grateful. I’d already posted about this birthday, but using different photos – one where my aunt is in fits of laughter. Just looking at the photos makes me smile and feel a bit nostalgic; it’s been nine years since I last hugged my friend, who moved to Spain.
I’ll sign off now, friends. See you in my next post. Thank you so much for your support; see you in the comments.
