Bilateral brain exercises 🤹♂️ Ejercicios de gimnasia bilateral
A fun afternoon with my brother
Hello, friends, welcome to my blog. I’ve been meaning to pop by the community for a while now to share some of the activities I’ve been doing with my family, making the most of those moments when the power’s out. I’m concerned about the passage of time and its impact on memory; perhaps the root of my concern lies in my grandmother’s senile dementia. The truth is that I feel it’s my duty to find tools and encourage my family members to do both physical and mental exercises, and it’s precisely the latter that I’d like to show you some examples of, joined on this occasion by my brother Luis.
It’s worth noting that these exercises aren’t my own creations, but ideas I’ve taken from other people who share them on Instagram, often making downloadable templates available to the public. What I did was buy a simple notebook in which to draw, trace, mark and cross out all the shapes in the exercises.
To do these exercises, the most important thing is to use both hands at the same time, creating matching or mismatched patterns, with the aim of activating and connecting the brain’s hemispheres; this boosts attention and concentration, increases processing speed and improves working memory, which in turn enhances problem-solving skills, emotional regulation and stress reduction.
These kinds of exercises are simple, fun and ideal for taking active breaks. You don’t need many resources: with some paper, a few coloured pencils or felt-tip pens, and about 5 to 10 minutes a day, we can give the brain a complete reset. Four exercises per session are enough. We did one where I also drew some circles, with one colour marked with a cross and another with a tick; then, using both hands at the same time, you have to look at the colour and colour it in accordingly.
Other exercises involved placing the fingers according to the number with the left hand and making the sign with the right hand following the arrow. This was the most difficult exercise for my brother because numbers are his weak point, but his difficulty arose when it came to locating the arrow; let’s not forget about bilateral coordination.
Following patterns with your hands is easier than creating them, but they’re all beneficial and these few minutes will, in the long run, prove worthwhile. My brother enjoys them and, step by step, I’m seeing how he’s overcoming difficulties more quickly.
These exercises are simple, but they’re designed for children and adults without major limitations, as my aunt, who has Down’s syndrome, can’t do them with both hands – only one at a time – and she doesn’t have much patience; she gets frustrated and angry, and I don’t want to have to deal with these exercises, so they’re not for everyone. 🫤😡
I recommend that you set aside a little of your time for these brain teasers; it’s like becoming a child again, and being a child means being happy.
