This is a topic that I know very well. You can call me an expert in this area. You might call me the expert in this area. Here I am 22 minutes till midnight, thinking about a possible deadline for this evening. It's not that I have to complete my work for midnight, but I told myself that I would
write every single day this year. Even now, I contemplate whether or not I'm cheating by orating instead of typing.
I have to wonder, given the circumstances of our current times, whether or not we're using technology to our full advantage. It seems to me that people in the positions of power in the past have used oration as a tool to leverage their words and to bring those words to "The common People." These days, every person has an oration device in their pocket, but they make themselves a slave to a keyboard or a pen.
I also have to wonder what the fundamental differences in the way that we write versus the way that we speak in oration. I am certain that oration will, or would Mark a difference in the way that people spoke or speak, but I wonder how much of a difference it makes when we do so much typing or writing instead of speaking. How much does that Mark the style of our writing? Or the patterns of our speaking? How does it mark the way in which we engage intellectually with the words we speak and the people that we engage with?
I see a duality here which I may like to explore. At times I despise typing, and at other times I find myself struggling to keep up with thought because my fingers are moving so fast, yet not fast enough. It is strange to me that each word must be so intentional when we speak them, yet when we write, there are many instances in which words flow for moments at a time as if pressing through the pen to paper or the keys to the digital page.
The subject of this does not have a great deal to do with procrastination, but the outcome of what I am writing, the content of which I am speaking about on this day has a great deal to do with procrastination and even a bit to do with the laziness that exists within me that wanted to shirk the responsibility before my eyes. I've told you at least once that I should be called a master procrastinator. It is my natural way.
Although it might be my natural way to leave things in the last moment, I know that it is possible to change habits such as this into more effective ways of engaging with my goals for the work in which I desire to get done. It's an interesting duality, though. When I look back on many of the things that I procrastinated on, I have come out with much different inputs to create my outcome and in finding that creativity, I have changed the entire finished product and sometimes been very surprised at the results.
I'm not defending the idea that procrastination is always a good thing. I do, however wholeheartedly believe that there are times in which leaving things to a point of discomfort and to a point in which there is pressure on a specific deadline, that there are tremendous amounts of creativity to be found in the pressure of the moments leading up to the deadline.
These are my thoughts for the day as I finish up my deadline, but that is just a construct of time to create accountability in my daily habits to write. This one point may become a bit of a broken record, because it's one of the things most on my mind while I'm creating my current habit. It is a strange habit to create, sharing one's thoughts in an open forum.
I am just grateful for the the ability to have access to platforms such as this, where we can freely share our ideas and learn from one another without the barriers of even language to get in our way. Maybe this is one of the reasons why I have such a deep love and fascination of language, whether it be written or spoken. Maybe it is partially this ease of access, this simple accessibility to information, technology, people and to the four walls and roof over my head that lead to my procrastination. This is something I intend to find out overtime as I continue this journey in life two word finding my best self.
Thanks for reading and much love.
