The "boom-bust" cycle is but a mere consequence of a sociopolitical system founded upon erroneous premise of infinite growth model on a finite planet. The sociocultural consequence of such societal model is rampant consumerism, in which the overriding directive of the average drone is feeding his ravenous envy and gluttony.
