A family is a group of people united by ties that go beyond blood. I learned that from my grandmother, and later I tried to instill it in my brothers. She told them: "We count on each other, we are there to support each other, advise each other and, when necessary, scold each other." I am the eldest of three boys, and I don't know when my brothers saw in me a kind of second father figure in addition to my father. More than that we were friends and confidants. A feeling of brotherhood without equal coexisted in us. When problems or difficulties arose, we would get together and, with that certainty that characterized the three of us, we would say:
"Let's resolve it as brothers that we are."
And in truth we did it, with things against or in our favor. Although our personalities were different, we managed to find a point in common: the well-being of our parents, the food in the pantry, and why not? Even the parties we organized at home to celebrate birthdays. Family is family... brother is brother... and there will always be times when those bonds become stronger.
Every little moment and every little photograph is a treasure. We may not notice it when celebrating a birthday or visiting a recreation site with friends or family, but a camera or even a cell phone gives us that visual portrait that will remain marked for the future. Every time I could, I would take a selfie with one of my brothers, whether they wanted it or not, although they always ended up giving in. Although it seems illogical, and I was the older brother, they were the ones who ended up having much more initiative in various aspects. I only approved, or suggested. Both of them, for example, ended up getting to Hive before me… the reason? My personality was somewhat skeptical.
As kids we used to make teams with the rest of the neighborhood kids inspired by those classic TV cartoons. My brothers and I stayed on the same side, as we usually got together to do bicycle races imitating meteor tracks. We also played baseball, soccer, and marbles; There were very bad children who tried to intimidate us, but there were three of us and we defended ourselves very well, hehehe. Even when we were little kids, they couldn't go against that popular phrase: "Let's solve it like brothers that we are." Our childhood was very happy in that regard; Sometimes we argued, however, we never get to cases of extreme hatred, fights, estrangements... none of it! We hardly ever stayed upset for long; it was usual for us to speak easily.
My brothers grew up very different from each other, one being more outgoing (the second born) and the other a little more dour (the youngest). I was like the mediator, hahaha, the quiet and shy one, but still with character. The jokes could not be missing between us, we joked about anything! When time made us bigger, the bond became a little stronger; we had to take adult lives very early, because of the difficult situation in Venezuela. At some point our paths diverged, I had to go to the city to study engineering and in doing so I left a lot of myself behind in the town where I grew up. I really missed both my parents and my siblings, even so I searched for ways to be in contact with them.
Sometimes that anxiety to become independent from the family nest wins us over, something that when we live is usually difficult. It is not easy to leave the place where you grew up and trained for a large part of your life, surrounded by the family you love so much. I really missed my brothers in that period and after that, we tried to take a little different paths. It didn't work out because somehow or another life would end up regrouping us again and, as a family of five, we stayed that way for years. My brothers helped me a lot in this complex stage of my life, for this reason I always defended them with nails, claws and teeth, even when they wanted to insult them in front of my own face.
I think that you learn from that: you love your relatives so much that you are willing to fight for them or together with them. After many situations I still wonder if I was really there for my brothers; of my best for them and now, when one of them has transcended, I have to give double myself. That phrase, that "Let's resolve it as brothers that we are." still coexists among us.
Sometimes I see so many arguments between brothers that part of me gets sad; They stop talking, wish each other dead, protest among themselves over money, material things or endless absurd things. It's not worth it! If you have a brother or sister, hug them or hug them, hug them every day! In the end it is what we have left of them and it is what they get from us: love. A simple photograph in the future becomes an ineffable treasure; a part of that moment in which, even if a family member is absent, we will continue to relive each of those magical moments that brought us so many smiles.
