What is lemon balm?
We know popularly as lemon balm a herbaceous plant or herb, with the scientific name Melissa officinalis, which is highly valued for its medicinal properties, especially with regard to relieving digestive problems and / or causing relaxation and relief of anxiety and nervousness.

Also called lemon balm, this herbaceous comes from the lands bathed by the Mediterranean and can reach a meter in height. It is a robust and perennial vegetable that blooms during the summer and can be easily identified due to its lemon smell (something that has caused other names by which it is usually known to be those of lemongrass or lemon leaf ).

Lemon balm can be used in multiple ways. Some of its most well-known properties and uses are indicated below.

¿Qué es el toronjil?

Conocemos popularmente como toronjil una planta herbácea o hierba, de nombre científico Melissa officinalis, que resulta fuertemente valorada por sus propiedades medicinales, especialmente en lo que se refiere a aliviar problemas digestivos y/o a provocar relajación y alivio de la ansiedad y el nerviosismo.

También llamada melisa, esta herbácea procede de las tierras bañadas por el Mediterráneo y puede llegar a alcanzar el metro de altura. Se trata de un vegetal robusto y perenne, que florece durante el verano y que puede identificarse con facilidad debido a su olor a limón (algo que ha provocado que otros de los nombres por los que suele ser conocida sean los de limoncillo u hoja de limón).

El toronjil puede ser empleado de múltiples maneras. Puede ingerirse, secar las hojas o incluso hacerse infusiones con él, algo por lo general vinculado a un uso más bien medicinal, si bien también es empleada para elaborar aceites asociados a usos cosméticos, para perfumar u aromatizar o para crear productos antimosquitos o dentífricos.

Se trata de una de las hierbas medicinales más empleadas, especialmente en América Latina.

Propiedades beneficiosas de esta planta
El toronjil posee una serie de propiedades beneficiosas para la salud y para el tratamiento de ciertas molestias, las cuales proceden de su composición química (es rico en eugenol, cariofileno o germacreno además de citral o citronela. Algunas de sus propiedades y usos más conocidos se indican a continuación.

1 . Calmante y sedante

Una de las propiedades más relevantes del toronjil es su efecto sedante y relajante, contribuyendo a rebajar estados de ánimo alterados o de agitación, como la depresión o la ansiedad. Asimismo contribuye a favorecer el sueño, algo útil en casos de insomnio.

2 . Analgésico
El toronjil también puede tener un interesante efecto anestésico, al reducir y bloquear las señales de malestar que normalmente viajarían rápidamente por nuestro sistema nervioso.

Es frecuente que se emplee para disminuir las molestias propias de la cefalea o la migraña, las molestias digestivas o incluso los dolores musculares.

3 . Hipotensivo
Otra de las propiedades útiles del toronjil se encuentra en su capacidad para hacer rebajar los niveles de tensión arterial, algo que puede ser de utilidad en casos de ansiedad y en sujetos con hipertensión.

4 . Alivia problemas gastrointestinales
Se suele emplear el toronjil para el tratamiento de las molestias de los problemas intestinales, dado que permite reducir los niveles de gases y prevenir situaciones como cólicos. También favorece la protección del hígado y la secreción de bilis (favoreciéndola).

¿Como preperar el toronjil?


Esta maravillosa planta puede ser preparada de diversas formas entre las mas comunes esta el té frio o caliente.
1 . Té de toronjil

Para preparar el té de toronjil, se aconseja emplear solo sus hojas, tanto secas como frescas, pues es la parte de la planta que contiene todas las propiedades beneficiosas para la salud.

Ingredientes

  • 3 cucharadas de hojas de toronjil;
  • 1 taza de agua hirviendo.
  • Modo de preparación

Añadir las hojas de toronjil en el agua hirviendo, tapar y dejar reposar durante algunos minutos. Luego, colar y beber de 3 a 4 tazas de este té al día.

2 . Jugo de toronjil
Toronjil: qué es, para qué sirve y cómo prepararlo
El jugo de toronjil puede prepararse con las hojas frescas o secas, siendo una forma sabrosa y refrescante de consumir esta planta medicinal y obtener sus beneficios.

Ingredientes

  • 1/2 taza de toronjil picado;
  • 200 ml de agua;
  • Jugo de 1 limón;
  • Hielo al gusto;
  • Miel para endulzar (opcional).

Modo de preparación

Licuar todos los ingredientes, colar y endulzar con miel. Beber de 1 a 2 vasos por día.

Posibles efectos secundarios
El toronjil es seguro cuando es consumido durante un máximo de 4 meses por adultos y 1 mes por bebés y niños. Sin embargo, si esta planta medicinal es consumida en cantidades excesivas o por un tiempo mayor de lo recomendado, puede causar náuseas, vómitos, dolor abdominal, mareos, disminución de la frecuencia cardíaca, somnolencia, caída de la presión e hiperventilación.

Debe tenerse precaución ya que todo en exceso es dañino.
