I think that nowadays, people get confused with this term. Let's make this clear: Schooling and education are not the same thing and they do not serve the same purpose.
One is designed to make serve others, the other is designed to make you serve yourself.
Now consider this quote from "Culture of Narcissism" from Christopher Lasch.
"The model citizen of early republican theory knew what his rights were and defended them from infringement by his fellow citizens and by the state. He could not be fooled by demagogues or overawed by the learned obfuscations of professional wise men. Appeals to authority left him unimpressed. Always on the alert for forgery, he had, moreover, enough worldly wisdom about men's motives, understanding of the principals of critical reasoning, and skill in the use of language to detect intellectual fraud in whatever form it presented itself"
The above description is an example of an educated person; the type of person that is self aware and self sufficient. In modern day societies where large entities such as government continue to have a heavy influence over how we live our lives, people who are educated remains to be a large threat to their reign.
Education provides the foundation for navigating through life as a human; not as a child or someone else's slave. In my introduction post, I mentioned about spiritual fulfillment. This is where is starts. Without education, a person will only walk the path someone else has set up for him, instead of walking his own. He may enjoy minor success but fulfillment is another problem entirely.
School does not teach you this. Modern day schools has become engineered training for a efficient workforce in the future. They infantilize students so that they are dependent on higher authorities to bring them happiness, safety, and security. An educated person is a threat to this model of oppression. And their abilities are no longer constrained by rigid schooling. They can imagine new worlds instead of trying to learn the one that exist now.
The average layman has a vague understanding of this concept of education and this is by design. He measures his success based on how well has followed the life script of the wage slave. He isn't going to question the directions of his superiors. It is only when he is running out of time, that he may start to think about where his life has gone.
