When is it time to stop driving?
My step dad is turning 83 soon. He has had a few strokes, is blind in his one eye and can't see very well with the other one. He is deaf in his one ear. Yet, being able to drive gives him a bit of freedom to get out of the house, and to go to his church on Sundays. Fortunately there hasn't been any accidents involving him yet, but we have had a few "near death experiences" while being in the car with him. So, I took an oath never to do it again - I value my life too much!
My one friend's mom had a serious accident when she was 80, and her car was written off. Her kids decided not to buy her another one, which was a very good choice.
I, for one, won't be able to tell my step dad he has to stop driving. It's easier said than done.
I just hope when I reach that age (or stage), that my kids will have the wisdom and the courage to tell me that the time has come. I'm sure I'll listen to them. I've always been a nervous driver, so it won't take a lot to get me to stop.
In the meantime, I'm grateful for the fact that I still have my mental faculties together enough to be a safety-conscious driver, and enjoy being a "granny taxi" while I still can.
Enjoy your day, and take care.
