Career is the path that we take in life to earn a living. It is often linked to something we love and passionate about.
So choosing of career is very important in one's life because the more you love it the easier it is for you to function properly.
But in today's society, parents oftentimes decide which career path their children must take.
They have this preconceive ideas of which career is more lucrative or will bring pride to the family. For some, they just want to be associated with the title that comes with a career.
One who treats sick patients is called doctor, one who works in the bank is called banker, one who works in law firm to defend others is called lawyer. These are like generic names.
So the fathers of those practicing these careers e are called fathers of doctor, lawyer or banker.
So in our society, they are often mentioned above others like philosophers, artist, grammarian, biologist, etc.
If you read primary school books, these are mentioned over and over. Teachers in most cases ask children what they want to be in future but with a preconceive answers like: what do you wish to be in future: a lawyer, doctor, banker, an engineer, etc.
So kids already have such idea of what the society approves as careers. So this make parent tell their children the path they must follow in life.
In most cases, they are less concerned about the child happiness. Some don't even bother whether the child has the intellectual capabiity to function properly in the field they want him/her to choose.
A child who does not have good command of numerals will likely struggle to come out in flying color if forced to study Banking and Finance or Accountancy.
Parents do more harm than good when they tell these children what they want them to become in future and not what these children truly want to be when they grow up.
A child knows what he or she wants. Yes we might be your children and a bit naive about life but when we reach that stage to choose career in life, we always know what to do.
In most cases, we choose these careers according to our capability.
For instance, i love lawyers. I actually wanted to be one growing up. After i had poor experience with the teachers who took me Literature in English, i lost every desire in becoming a lawyer.
In fact, i got confused at a time but i never stopped trying to discover what i want in life.
As God would have it, i picked Philosophy and it happens to be a true calling. I flourished in my undergraduate years and never looked back.
It is never rosy in picking up a career. It could be a bit easy if you have many brothers and sisters to properly tell you what each career stands for. But for those of us with no such opportunity, we just need time to figure it out and we always do.
So rather than choosing for children, parents should guide them by asking for careers they love, give them guidelines on what all these careers are all about and let them choose. They have the right to decide.
As parents, all you need to do is support them from your heart. Give them all they need to survive and succeed in that path they have chosen.
This way, you can be at peace with yourself and your children because comes rain or sunshine, they know they chose the career themselves and not imposed on them by their parents.
So give your children the opportunity to pick a career. They need to choose what they love and believe they can flourish in.
