The butterfly undergoes the process called metamorphosis.
The female butterfly will lay about 20 to 200 eggs on a leaf. These eggs are usually white in colour. After two or three days, theese eggs will hatch and a caterpillar will emerge from each egg. The caterpillar eats leaves to stay alive.

After about eight weeks, the caterpillar will shed its skin and turn into a chrysalis. A chrysalis is a caterpillar that is covered with a layer of skin that looks like silk.

About two weeks later, the layer will get thinner and an adult butterfly will emerge. It will be wet and have crumped wings. The wings take about an hour to dry.
