It’s the first time since 1998 that the Capitals will play for the Stanley Cup and it’s the first time they’ve reached the big stage in the Ovechkin era.

The Washington Capitals have finally won a Stanley Cup.

They won the Presidents' Trophy in 2009-10, but were upset in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals by the Montreal Canadiens. Last season, they won the Presidents' Trophy, but were eliminated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Second Round.

They're back again as Presidents' Trophy winners and dreaming again of winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in their history. This year, the dream will come true.

Captain Alex Ovechkin, who scored an early power-play goal and was the playoff MVP, and his teammates are Washington’s first championship hockey team - and the city’s first champion in a major pro sport since the Redskins won the Super Bowl in early 1992.
