A bunch of goslings hatched today on #featheredfriday by @melinda010100
Looks like the nests around the lake are already hatching. These guys must have just emerged a day or two ago as I didn't see them last time I was walking around the lake.
They look hilarious at this age, like golden cottonballs with webbed feet.
The parents kept a watchful eye out on me. They were peaceful probably because I was one of the few people not walking a dog.
They are super gawky right now and do a bit of stumbling around. But fortunately for the parents they are already programmed to eat grass.
They basically eat anything that's in front of them in a super clumsy way.
Thankfully the rains earlier this week make the new grass nice and tender for them.
Hopefully some more of the nests hatch soon so they'll have strength in numbers. A couple of hawks are nesting nearby so I suspect some of these guys will fall prey to them eventually.
They better stay close together in a group and not wander too far away. I suspect they roost on the floating islands on the lake at night so they should be safe from foxes.
The parents are constantly on guard for domesticated dogs, hawks and foxes. They don't seem to bothered by cameramen fortunately. I'll be keeping tabs on their growth, hopefully most will survive this year.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
