Rice is the main staple of Chinese cuisine, but it can come in many different forms. The main ones being a bowl of white boiled rice or friend rice. You will also get rice noodles, and maybe one that westerners are less familiar. Congee - this is rice porridge.

I went to a restaurant that specialises in congee recently. It doesn't have an English name, it's Chinese name is Mi's Chiu Chow style casserole congee. Bit of a mouthful, so I'm just going to call in Mi's Congee. This is the front of the restarant from the inside looking out, and from the outside looking in.

Luckily I arrived quite early that evening as I missed lunch and wanted an early meal. There were only a couple of other customers, but by the time I finished the place was packed.

Congee is great when you want some rice based food, but boiled rice is a bit too filling. It's also ideal when because you can add ingredients in it. At Mi's, they do bowls of congee with different types of meat in it, like chicken, pork, seafood, vegetarian etc. By default, everyone orders a bowl of congee which is kept warm on the stove, you can see that underneath the menu. The table is set up with big bowls for the congee.

I ordered a bowl of chicken congee, it was their signature. Plus a dish of salty egg fried pumpkin.

The pumpkin didn't have a lot of salty egg flavour, and it was a bit greasy for my liking. I was expecting it to be nice and crunchy to add some texture to the congee. This was quite a disappointment.

The congee, on the other hand was very good, it was smoth but you can still taste the rice al dente texture. There was quite a lot of chicken pieces inside. You can see how pipping hot it is! The small portion was very generous and there was around 5 bowls all together.

It's not surprising that this place is very busy, and opens till 3am!!!
