One of the most famous street food in Taiwan has got to be stinky tofu. You either love it or hate it. I love it of course. Stinky tofu is fermented tofu and that's what gives its aroma, or stink, depending on which camp you're in. Different places uses different methods of fermentation but normally involves liquid, and some even use tea. This is one of my favourite place call Gold Medal, and it has had many reviews included from TV stations.
Once the stinky tofu is fermented, they are deep fried till crispy on the outside and soft inside. Although the tofu has a lovel aroma, it is too dry to eat straight. That's why each stall have their own secret ingredient, the sauce. Some just use a standard chilli or sweet sauce, some mix a few type of sause together, and some make their own secret recipe. Gold Medal says they have their own secret recipe for the sauce. They also add some coriander on top to finish it off.
Each of these portions cost just over USD2. They are delicious with a kick from the sauce, but very filling espcially since its deep fried. My wife sits on the opposite camp, and even I sometimes have difficulty finishing a portion by myself. That's why I don't go very often, but whever I'm with friends in the same camp, we often head over to Gold Medal and get a portion to share.
Ps Photos are a bit scarce on this post as I was too busy indulging on the stinky tof
