Coffee has been a part and parcel of my day to day schedule since my early med school days, for obvious reasons of course! It's still hard to imagine those sleepless nights before exams without that cup of coffee.
At first it was just the coffee that mattered. It started out as a necessity. I remember my coffee journey started with those disgusting instant coffee packs. As a first year med student spending a "fortune" on a cup of latte of cappuccino was luxury I couldn't afford. But once I had myself a part time teaching job secured, I decided to be a bit adventurous on one Sunday evening. My students had been a handful that day, and I swear my head was going to explode. I decided to use the 15 mins recess to take a stroll down the park. A cozy looking coffee shop right down the corner of the alley where my bike was parked. I usually take my bike for a quick ride on such hectic days, but that day I walked straight past my bike towards the coffee shop.
It was destiny, because that changed everything! That small cup of cappuccino showed me there's more to coffee than those sachets of instant coffee powder, so much more!
It changed the way I look at coffee, it changed the way I talk about coffee.
It changed everything.
And thus I began spiraling down a path from which there was no coming back.
My days of coffee just for the caffeine are long gone. Over the years I have learned to appreciate coffee on a more deeper level and it's not just the taste of the coffee that determines my experience of a cuppa!
I care about the ambience of where I'm standing (or sitting) with my coffee. I care about the cup it is served in. I am pretty sure coffee had made me obsessed with classy looking, vintage cups. I never get the full satisfaction of a good coffee if I am drinking it out of one of those boring, vanilla mugs. A vintage design, a classy shade of colour...every little bit makes a difference.
Since I have moved to a new house, there was always something missing....a nice cup! I went out with my wife yesterday and fixed that. Got us these pretty cool looking mugs.
Next up on the agenda is fixing the ambience of our balcony, because I have a feeling we are going to standing there with our cups quite often!
