EDUCATION enter Nigeria through the Christian Missionary, and these Missionaries came from European World, and European Education comes from the Ancient Greek Empire.

when we talk about written history in terms of Education, Greek does not immediately come to mind. it has been asserted that the invention of Phonetic Alphabet which was man's first step from primitive to civilization emanated from the East
Ancient Greek were made up people from different tribes. the first to inhabit were the Aegeo-Cretans. the Helens were the next tribe after they attacked and conquered the indigenous people. Helen's, because of their supposed common descent from the mythical ancestorr who came in a steady intrusion from about 1100BC and also dominated a great part of the country. Dorians also dispossessed many of the earlier settlers and forced them to move to Athens while others swum across the Aegean to settle on the Island and on the Ionian Coast.
In Ancient Greek, there arose arrays of independence city-states which never became united into national state for many reasons. they were about 300 city states. they were only united after their defect by Maceden in about 388 B.C while under the leadership of Rome
Since Education is a reflection of the Environment, the educational system of the Greek differs from one city to another. in like manner, there was a single philosophy of education and the goal was
- creation of "man of wisdom"
- creation of "man of action"
the above depends on the peculiar need of a city-state. many lay more emphasis on man of wisdom while others, man of action, some prefer both man of wisdom and man of action
Common features that about 300 city-states of Greek have
- they all participate in all/every sporting activities
- they speak the same language
- they believe they were born by the same parents called Helens
- they all participate in the same religious Feast and observe them
PROBLEMS
Politically, they are all enemies to each others. when any city-state defect each other, they;
- changed the name of the city they defected
- all the right they have will be gone
- they will live as slave to their conqueror
when it comes to Ancient Greek Empire system of Education (which will discuss in subsequent posts), we will be talking about two City-states what are Spartans and the Athens and will also give reasons behind the selection of only two City-states out of about 300 city-states.
