Where souls were forgotten: visit to the largest jail in Uruguay馃敒馃泝 // Donde quedaron olvidadas las almas: visita a la carcel mas grande de Uruguay馃敒馃泝
Para ingresar debes registrarte previamente otro d铆a para luego poder concurrir.
Luego de caminar unas cuantas cuadras finalmente lleg贸 a mi destino.
Hello to the entire Hive community !!! The truth is that it was not easy to write this post but I felt the great need to do it, that's why I am here.
Sadness fills the soul when seeing a friend or loved one in jail; everyone who's been through it will know what I'm talking about. Seeing those big concrete blocks, quasi buildings full of forgotten souls, whether it's their fault or not being where they are, we cannot deny that it is one of the worst places where a human being can live.
Sometimes it is a first and last step for the total decline of a life ahead, to adopt a lot of codes of coexistence, to act as a hard, cold and calculating person; to which circumstances lead them to survive in that place where it is not known if he may make it out alive.
Getting to the prison is not easy, it is on the outskirts of Montevideo (where I currently reside). It takes 1 hour and 20 minutes by bus and approximately 25 minutes by car. EL COMCAR (prison number 4 "Santiago V谩zquez") is the largest prison in Uruguay, it has 11 modules where inmates are separated according to the type of crime and length of time in the establishment.
To enter you must previously register another day to later be able to attend. The visits alternate according to the month and can be Tuesdays and Saturdays or Thursdays and Sundays.
I previously registered I am going to visit a friend who has been confined in Module 4 for about 4 months.
I leave my house at 6.30 am to take the only bus that serves me the "494". It is not dawn yet, I am sleepy and a feeling of sadness that accompanies me to every block. I imagine what I'm going to find if, but I can't imagine the magnitude of the feeling that I would later find inside me when I left.
I arrive and I realize that although I previously checked the list of clothes allowed for entry, I have things that are not allowed to enter the establishment: black clothes with a hood. I go to one of the three warehouses that work at the door and rent an orange wool jumpsuit to enter for $ 80 and there I also pay $ 30 to leave my personal belongings that are also not authorized to enter.
With the diver already rented and a transparent bag with two cakes, I go to the registration line again, in which I stay for almost 1 hour until they take my personal data, take a photo of me and give me a card that says: Visitor Woman module Four.
I place myself in the other row with my package and I am already a few meters from entering but I have to wait another half hour because they take time to review everything that each person enters the jail.
Upon entering, they finally check my package and they make me go through a body scan, finally leaving for my destination, which is module 4, almost two hours after arriving.
After entering the great city of iron and cement, I do not know where to go and a very kind girl asks me where I am going and offers to guide me since she is going to a neighboring module, to number 3.
After walking a few blocks I finally reached my destination. Upon entering the module I hand over my document again, they ask me for my friend's cell number and name and I wait behind a large gate for him to arrive through a long corridor that has two large empty rooms where visitors are.
I wait about 5 minutes and when I look up I see him walking from afar. Tall, skinny, barely deteriorated in the face; but better than when she had last seen him on the street, bad enough for his drug use.
We hugged each other tightly until we felt ribs and we walked slowly to the great room.
As you enter there are a few concrete benches that are already occupied, the rest of the people sitting on the floor with blankets. we get a bench and sit right there, after another long hug we light a cigarette and start talking.
With tears in my eyes, I just want to know why he did things wrong because I did not listen to his family when they asked him to leave the street and crime a long time ago. He just looks at me with tearful eyes and says, "I was wrong." to which I only respond with a hug.
They sentenced him to 3 years and 5 months for possession and sale of narcotics. Which could decrease with work and good behavior but in jail the days are long.
we talked for about 5 hours on a visit since I stayed all the time allowed. we cry more than we laugh. And the scenery was not pretty.
14.30 P.M and the police begin to withdraw the visitor and I feel many things inside of me.
That last hug leaves me in ruins and slowly I leave behind his eyes sadder than mine. Walking down that long corridor many things that we lived together come to mind as well as a movie.
Again I start the journey to get out of the Comcar and I carry my soul in my hands, shattered.
Deep down inside I think that I would never do anything to endanger my freedom, ever. Every block I look back and think: Where were the souls forgotten?
This has been today's post, it has not been easy but I think I managed to express all my feelings and I hope you can capture my essence.
The photos are my own, taken with my cell phone, a Nokia C1.
