Afternoon everyone….

For those of you that are worried about the beating precious metals have been taking. Especially silver, which has been getting pounded hard.

Don’t be….

As long as you are holding physical metals and not fake paper metals you are fine. The only way you lose is if you sell at a loss. Unless you absolutely need to sell, for an emergency situation. Then these are just bumps in the road.

But I will share some of my recent experiences with you on what LCS’s and Buy Gold places will pay for your stuff.

I have been reorganizing the way that I collect and stack for roughly two years now. While I would love to just collect numismatic graded coins. That’s not really an option for me, since the prices of these coins are very high to ridiculously high.

So I’m what I would classify as a hybrid stacker. I buy numismatic graded coins that I want, when I can. But I also stack for weight. Meaning generic bars and rounds in silver, plus government minted coins like American Eagles, Canadian Maples. In gold I only buy government minted coins.

Why you ask…

Because gold bars are the least desirable to own in gold. They are the most counterfeited item in precious metals. They are very hard to sell, and you will loose 15-20% of spot price selling them.

Here is what I learned going to two different LCS’s (local coin shops), one pawn shop and three buy gold places.

This is what I brought with me:

A tube of ASE 2019 (20)
A tube of Canadian Maples (25)
A full mint sealed roll of (10) 2019 kookaburras
Several loose semi numismatic coins in air-tites, pandas, koalas, Libertads and others
A pair of ten ounces bars both Scottsdale stackers
A full sheet of ten one ounce Silvertowne bars sealed.

I’ll go in order with what they offered:

ASE - LCS’s offered $1 over spot. Buy gold places were at spot and never mind anything the pawn shop said.
Canadian Maples - LCS’s one offered spot the other offered $.50 over spot. Buy gold one offered spot, the other two offered 5% under spot.

Now here’s where it gets depressing….

For those of you buying semi numismatic coins like I was….. grab your tissues.
Full sealed roll of kookaburras - LCS’s offered 10% below spot. I asked why? They said the inventory would sit, and if spot dropped they need to make money on them. Bad answer to me. The buy gold places, one said he wouldn’t buy them at all. The other two offered 15% below spot.
Assorted semi numismatics were the same except for the Libertads. I was offered spot for those.
All bars were 2% below spot, no matter what mint they were from at LCS’s. Buy gold places were all different. One said $1 under spot. One said 7% under spot, the other said $2 under spot.

While I am not trying to deter anyone from buying what you like, in a time of need you will never recoup the crazy premiums on those semi numismatic coins. The only way to do that is to sell them on eBay or another platform and that takes time.

There are semi numismatic coins series that are true winners that I still have such as the Queens Beast series and the Marvel coins. But other then that I’ve sold off most of my semi numismatic coins for generic weight.

While I am by no means giving advice, I’m merely sharing my experience with my experiment.

And just to show that I’m still buying some semi numismatic coins. Here is the Queens Beast completer coin I just got.
